The Economic and Environmental Impact of the Automobile

There is no such thing as a car. So what does this mean to you? What does this do to your lifestyle?

Bed Guard Rail

Can you see the point I am trying to make? It is this: you could not visualize your present day way of life, if somehow, incredibly, the automobile were suddenly subtracted from our midst. The longer you think about the consequences of such a hypothetical event, the longer becomes your list of all the ways that you would be affected.

Bed Guard Rail

Starting with the obvious point, most people would quickly find that their travelling range was sharply limited. The number of places they could visit, or the things that they could do, would be cut in half at the very least. At the simplest level, the scope of interesting experiences open to most people would be greatly reduced without the widespread availability of the automobile.

Look at the problem in another way. For a great many persons, the car is the only practical means of getting to work. Without cars, nearly everyone who now lives in suburban areas, for instance, would be unable to go to work. Something would have to change; either their work would come to them, or they would have to move. It wouldn't take much time to figure that unless the whole structure of the industry were to alter, the suburbs would virtually disappear. Or to juggle slightly with the framework of our imaginary discussion, it is entirely reasonable to claim that the automobile is a major factor explaining why the suburbs are continuing to grow.

Nor does the discussion of this particular point end here. People living in suburbs want expressways that can get them to and from their job in the middle of the city in the shortest possible time. People who live in metropolis areas don't always think so much of this idea. They claim - or at least many of them do - that expressways carve up the cities and leave them ruined. Who is right? That is a question that may well turn into one of the most controversial political issues regarding infrastructure and domestic policies in the future.

Cars are built by people. Self-evident but significant. The automobile companies collectively are the largest employer in the industrialized world today. Quite obviously, cars and their manufacture are a vital component of our economy.

Beyond the manufacturing sector of the auto industry are the people who design, advertise and sell automobiles, there is almost an endless succession of men and women who earn their livelihood in an occupation that is connected in some way with that one central object, the car. The miner who extracts iron ore from the ground, the smelter-worker who converts the iron to steel, the metallurgist who decides the exact composition of the steel according to what function it must perform - these persons operate at the beginning of the process. The chemist who synthesizes artificial rubber for the tires, or invents a new plastic for the tail light, is equally involved in the creation of the automobile.

How about the engineer who designs the highways and bridges we drive on? How about the truckers carrying gravel to the construction site, or the pavers who finish the asphalt surface? Don't forget the geologist who searches for crude oil, or the well driller who brings it to the surface, or the engineer who separates the crude oil into gasoline, oil, grease, and related products.

Driving instructors depend on the car for their living. So do mechanics, rust-prevention specialists, chauffeurs, race car drivers, taxi drivers, truck drivers, and countless dozens of other drivers. Tax collectors, traffic policemen, lawyers, and judges all have the car to thank for some portion of their income. Accessory manufacturers produce anything from fancy hubcaps to state of the art stereo systems, GPS systems, etc. Finally, at the end of the cycle, there is the auto wrecker. The next person on the scene is the car salesman and the process starts over.

A large percentage of Americans either work directly for an auto manufacturer or make their bread due to the automobile industry. If the automobile were to suddenly disappear, the economic consequences would be utterly impossible to predict.

Our dependence on the automobile is the root of two particularly worrisome problems presently facing our society.

Problem one is that automobiles damage the environment. The fear of a future landscape completely covered with asphalt is a topic that many environmentalists and the next generation are extremely concerned with. Automobile junkyards and roadside billboards are only beautiful by those who are making money from them.

But the aesthetics of paved roads, junk yards and billboards isn't the primary concern. By far the most immediate and serious worry posed by our involvement with the automobile is the danger of air pollution. The petroleum based fuels used by car engines emit small quantities of carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, and other green house gases. Given the tremendous number of cars being put on the road each day in emerging countries such as India and China, the problem only promises to get worse.

Despite the danger that exists, considerable progress has been made towards minimizing the emission of green house gases. Perhaps as important a change as any is that public awareness of the problem now exists, so that the pollution caused by automobiles is no longer ignored.

The second major problem with the automobile is that it is dangerous. Even with the introduction of additional safety features over the past thirty years such as air bags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control a North American is killed in a car accident every hour. More North Americans have been killed in automobiles than in wars. These are incredible statistics if you stop and think about them.

What can be done about this highly unpleasant side-effect of the car? The problem can be tackled in a number of ways. One approach is that of improved highway design. Better lighting, better signs, better intersection control, less rigid light standards and guard rails, and other improvements have all contributed to a less painful accident per mile figure than might otherwise have been the case.

Another approach is to improve the design of the car from the point of view of safety. Unquestionably, great steps have been taken. Fifteen years ago, air bags were an oddity; now, even passenger side air bag and side door air bags are becoming common.

Despite these measures, "consumer protection" groups have been outspoken in their criticism of the manufacturers, whom they accuse of dragging their heels, being more concerned with designing glamour into their cars versus designing them safely, with the intention of attracting a younger consumer base. Given the fact that they are obliged to pay satisfactory dividends to shareholders, the manufacturers not surprisingly are opposed to any change that threatens to decrease their profits.

However, by and large, the car companies have been agreeable to accept government imposed safety standards. All car manufacturers are on the same playing field, so none will suffer a competitive disadvantage. Despite this acceptance, however, there has still been some resistance in recent years by the manufacturers, on the grounds that some government standards are too tough to be met in the time allowed.

Nevertheless, innumerable objective studies have all pointed to the same conclusion - that the greatest single cause of accidents is, in fact, the driver. The reasons for this vary with the circumstances - in one case, the problem may be lack of driving skill; in another, a momentary lapse of attention. Or poor vision. Or failure to compensate for bad conditions. Or intoxication. Or over confidence. Or a combination of several of these, or a different reason altogether. But these problems we ourselves can correct - and that is the whole point of this article. Anyone can learn to drive. But expert driving - and really, safe driving is exactly the same thing - it is a skill that takes time to acquire, and has as its benefits the pleasure and satisfaction that come from doing any task properly.

Sturdy Construction with a Secure Fit
The all-steel frame provides a strong, safe barrier that prevents your child from falling from bed while sleeping. The patented Gap Guard system features two braces that hold the bedrail tightly against the opposite side of the mattress. This ensures that the bedrail does not shift or slip during the night and prevents unwanted gaps. The sidewall is 20 inches high, so it can accommodate the thickest of mattresses.

Not only does the bedrail meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and is certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), it's also PVC- and lead-free.

Easy and Quick Set Up and Storage
There are no tools required to set up the bedrail, so it's ideal for busy parents and caregivers. When you need to store the bedrail away, the HideAway technology incorporates an exclusive Glide Trac system that allows the bedrail to fold flat. It rolls smoothly and tucks in easily between the mattress and box spring. This keeps the bedrail stored discretely when not in use and allows access to the mattress for changing bed sheets and comforters.

Wipes Clean and Lightweight for Travel
A durable mesh nylon fabric covers the steel frame, making it comfortable to the touch. For added convenience, the fabric is easy to keep clean by simply wiping with a damp washcloth.

The bedrail measures 43 inches long and 20 inches tall for extra security and your peace of mind.

The Regalo HideAway Bedrail is backed by a manufacturer's limited 90-day warranty.

Bunk Bed Plans - How to Choose the Best Bunk Bed For Your Kids!

Bunk bed plans can be your key to getting in good with your kids. Every child loves a set of bunk beds. There's something infinitely charming and alluring about being able to sleep one on top of the other. Kids everywhere have been sleeping on these beds for generations, and this style is just as popular today as it ever was. Plus, it's an easy kind of bed to build. You can go as simple or elaborate as you choose, depending on your needs and level of skill, and either way, it's hard to go wrong. This type of bed involves simple construction and easy to find materials, making it a great project for even a beginner..

Bed Guard Rail

Typically, bunk bed plans will start you out with building two separate twin beds. This is easy enough to do, as all you're doing is basically building a frame for the mattress along with a headboard. You don't even really need a foot board, though you could include one if you like. You can choose a design that includes the use of box springs to support the mattress, or you can simply build a bed with a plywood base on which you'll set one mattress. You can even let your kids help you decide on the design.

Bed Guard Rail

Naturally, since your kids will be using this bed, you'll want to make sure it's safe. Be sure your plans include guard rails on the sides, especially on the top bunk. Also, the mattresses need to fit perfectly into the frames, the frames need to be sturdy, and the ladder should be attached to the bed and not removable. These precautions, included in most plans, will ensure your kids have a safe night as well as a fun one. There will be no rolling off the top bunk on YOUR bed!

You can buy bunk bed plans at most craft stores, do it yourself stores, and even craft stores. You can also buy them online. By building your own bed, you can customize it as much as you like, so it truly becomes your own creation. Use the plans as a guide for the bed itself, then go crazy on the decorations. Your kids will love it and so will you.

6 Safety Tips For Bunk Beds and Your Kids

Your little baby is growing up fast! It seems just like yesterday you were putting together a crib. Now, your child is ready for the next stage of life. And with just a little planning and research, your child's next bed can be as safe for him as his crib was-and a lot more fun!

Bed Guard Rail

1. Closing the gap

Bed Guard Rail

Fatal deaths associated with bunk beds are not usually caused by the child falling from the top bunk. Fatalities occur, usually, when a small child is strangled between the gap between an ill-fitting mattress and the bunk bed frame. Never allow a child under 6 to be on the top bunk. Measure any gap you find between the guardrail and the mattress: if it's greater than 3 inches, a child could slip through be fatally injured.

2. Check your supports

It might be just a result of normal horseplay, but many bunk-bed related injuries are caused by kids in the bottom bunk who push up at the top bunk. This type of activity can be lessened by ensuring that the top bunk is supported by sturdy supports that are fastened in place by secure hardware. Please, no floating board support systems; these tend to move around a lot, and increase the likelihood of injuries.

3. The right mattress

This is very scary, and very important: children have been strangled in the US and throughout the world by falling through openings between a bunk bed mattress and its frame while they've been sleeping. Make sure your mattress fits snugly. A gap greater than three inches anywhere spells trouble. Ask your dealer for help if you're not sure.

4. Rails on both sides

Bring your ruler when you go shopping, because the lower guard or safety rails should be no more than 3.5 inches above the height of the mattress. Any higher than that, and little children may be able to slip out. On the top bed, guard rails should run on both sides of the bunk-and the top safety rail should be at least five inches above the top of the mattress to prevent your child from tumbling out. Eventually, all of us learn how to sleep without tumbling out of bed, but children have not yet learned this.

5. Horseplay

Yes, bunk beds are fun, but parents, please take a moment to teach your children the hazards of rough play, and the consequences for participating in rough play. Make sure children are using the ladder properly, and not sliding down the ladder, just for the fun of it.

6. Metal Beds

Metal bunk beds may be more prone to collapse; constant motion tends to jiggle the bolts loose. Regularly inspect your metal beds for breaks or cracks. Also, keep an eye on the fin tabs-those support devices located in or near the beds eight corners. If your bed is damaged, stop using it immediately and contact your dealer for advise on repair or replacement. Reputable dealers offer a lifetime warranty.

We hope your new bunk beds bring many hours of enjoyment and comfort to your life. Good luck!

Baby Cribs are More Than Just Furniture!

Purchasing a crib is a critical decision for new parents. A baby crib is the focal point of the nursery, but more importantly it must be a safe place for the baby to rest while mom and dad are not in the room. Think about it! Your infant will spend most of her time away from caregivers in the crib. So selecting the safest crib for your newborn is of utmost importance; it will become the centerpiece of a warm, inviting nursery as well as the safest place when not in mommy's arms.

Bed Guard Rail

The first choice you'll need to make is which style baby crib you would like for the décor of your baby's nursery. There are a variety of styles of cribs available nowadays.
The first and most common is the standard crib. When selecting the standard baby crib you need to be mindful of the two types of models.

Bed Guard Rail

Standard baby cribs either have a single drop side or a double drop side where both sides drop down. It depends on your needs and where you would like to position the baby crib in your nursery.

The standard baby crib will provide the classic baby nursery look; however it will not provide the longevity on the next option, the convertible baby crib.

Convertible cribs convert to a toddler bed from standard crib. These cribs even have the possibility to change from a toddler bed into a day or full sized bed. This long lasting feature offered by convertible cribs makes them a very attractive choice for new parents. Although they are a more costly item when new baby expenses are all ready piling up the convertible baby crib can ideally save you money in the long run.

Next in line would be canopy cribs have four posts on the corners of the bed. These posts hold up a usually metal frame on which you can place fabric canopies. Parents who buy canopy cribs want a more elegant & sophisticated design for their nursery. Round cribs are gaining popularity. Round cribs come with a canopy frame and they add a touch of class to your baby's nursery. Round Cribs usually have large double wheel casters which make the round crib easy to move when you need to move to another area.

Let's say you have guests and you want to have them sleep in peace and quiet, you can roll the baby in his/her round crib in your bedroom. Round Crib locks into place when you have found the perfect spot for it. Round baby cribs give the look and feel of a canopy yet round baby cribs add mobility for the parents.

For the traveling parents, a portable crib is an option. Portable Cribs give parents the flexibility of taking their child anywhere to get a good night sleep. The portable crib goes anywhere and everywhere you go. Bring the comforts of home when you travel - whether on vacation or just visiting Grandpa. The portable crib folds compactly to easily carry with you. Some portable cribs, convert into a comfortable crib mattress when your child outgrows the bassinet. Parents who travel often may consider the standard baby crib for home and opt for a portable crib when out and about.

Once you have decided the type of baby crib you'd like begin to shop around. For starters, research the names of reputable furniture stores and crib manufacturer.

Your shopping experience for baby cribs is one that is propelled by finding the best for baby. This isn't a time to bargain hunt. Locate a store or showroom browse around and inspect the construction of the available cribs. Any crib worth considering should be made with a sturdy construction. The frame of the baby crib must be solid and secure. If possible check to see if the crib is stable in all positions as most baby cribs on the market today convert and adjust to grow along with the child. Inquire about when and where the baby crib was manufactured. If interested, learn the type of wood from which the baby crib is constructed. Be sure to verify that the baby crib comes complete with instruction and warranty.

When your choice is finalized and the crib arrives in your home there are a variety of safety matters that need to be put in place. The first begins with assembly. Be sure to follow all instructions. Test again to ensure that the crib is sturdy and secure as it was in the furniture store where you purchased it. If you opted for a crib with movable parts be sure all sides or rails lock into place. Nothing could be worse than the thought of the baby injuring himself while holding onto ill-assembled crib rails. When placing the mattress inside the frame of the baby crib make sure they are right against all of the sides of the crib sets. You would not want your child's foot to get lodged between the crib and mattress. Over time any mattress that appears worn or ill-fitted to the crib frame should be replaced immediately.

Before long, the time will come when you can adorn your crib with the bedding. Some safety rules will apply here as well. You should always take off any jewelry, pillows or stuffed animals from the baby when you place them into the baby cribs. This will keep the baby safe from any choking or suffocation hazard. Do not place the crib sets close to windows, lamps, electrical plugs or curtains. Soft pillows, mattresses, comforters, stuffed toys and bumper pads are not be used in cribs sets. When babies play with toys in the crib they should be supervised. As your child grows it is important to reassess the safety of the baby crib.

For example, when the baby can sit up, make sure you move the mattress down to the lowest point. As your bundle of joy starts teething you may need to affix a plastic guard to the bed rail as many growing youngster develop the habit of gnawing on the crib frame. Some baby cribs are designed with non-toxic finishes. Selecting and using a baby crib for your infant is challenging task, but one that will provide safety and design to your baby's nursery.

Loft Beds Present Stylish Bedroom Options

Recently loft beds have become popular, especially for children, teens and young adults. One of the main reasons is because of its space saving quality. Actually the loft bed was used in the early history of beds, when homes were very small. A sleeping platform was placed above part of the living area on poles. Day to day activities took place beneath the family sleeping area. Today the reasons to choose a platform bed are much the same-to be able to use the space under the sleeping area for play, relaxation, study, or storage.

Bed Guard Rail

You will be amazed when you first start looking for a loft bed at the variety of styles. You can find them made with various kinds of wood or metal. The design can be fantasy, contemporary, traditional, fancy or plain. They come in the full array of single size to king size. They come finished or unfinished, but usually assembly is required.

Bed Guard Rail

When choosing a bed for children you will want to be sure to check safety standards because of the height. A loft bed is not recommended for children under 6. The platform needs guard rails on both sides of the bed, even if one side is against the wall. The mattress should be more than 3 ½ inches from the guardrail on both sides. The loft will need a ladder firmly attached when set up.

Children's loft beds come in a lot of fun styles. You will want to involve your child in choosing the right bed that fits his/her personality and interests. You can choose from theme beds, tent beds, and whimsical beds to beds with a slide and a variety of built ins beneath the sleeping area. You can also order just the platform and set up the area beneath however you like. Children set up their area for play. Teens usually set up their area for study and relaxation.

When the area is going to be used primarily for study and computer use, you will want to choose a bed with a desk, shelving, and drawers. You will want to be able to provide good lighting. A comfortable chair or beanbag for reading or listening to music is a good option.

Many styles come with the option of having another bed under the loft that is placed to form an L shape. This gives your child or teen space for a friend to sleep over. Before you buy, spend some time looking at all your options to make sure you make the right choice.

Dreaming in Root Metaphors: Classified Information and the Pure Truth

The latest addition to my dreamer's toolbox promises to be quite versatile and especially useful for deciphering those dreams in my favourite sub-category of dreams: sacred dreams. The tool that I am referring to is the concept of root metaphors, and in this first article-in a projected series that will explore its functionality-I shall begin by taking a moment to explain the basic concept. The analysis of one of my own BIG dreams will then reveal how my dreaming mind, by playing with the cultural metaphor that "classified information must be the pure truth", creates a clash between the building blocks of this idea in order to move on towards a more open-ended approach to handling Truth.

Bed Guard Rail

What is a root metaphor?

Bed Guard Rail

The root metaphor is a concept that I first encountered in Kelly Bulkeley's insightful work, The Wilderness of Dreams, subtitled Exploring the Religious Meanings of Dreams in Modern Western Culture. Most of us associate the term metaphor with poetry, and we recall how to distinguish it from the simile: like the simile, the metaphor makes a comparison, but it does so by establishing an equation between two dissimilar things. That man is a fox, for example.

Webster's online dictionary explains that a root metaphor "is not necessarily an explicit device in language, but a fundamental, often unconscious, assumption." This broader application of the term metaphor is the one employed by Bulkeley, who is partly informed by Lakoff and Johnson, the co-authors of Metaphors We Live By. These linguistic philosophers begin by saying that "the essence of metaphor is understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another," and then go on to develop the argument that "metaphorical thinking is basic to all human conceptual thinking."

These metaphors that we live by are not always hidden from our eyes. Sometimes, repeated usage of a metaphor can transform it into a slogan, such as "time is money". Bringing our attention to such metaphors guards us against the corollaries that may unconsciously ensue from them, such as the idea that time spent on matters that do not generate money must be without value.

Metaphors in our dreams

So far, I have only talked about the use of metaphors in our waking experience. The prospect of discovering those metaphors that remain unconscious--even while we live by them--is certainly alluring and makes one fully appreciate Bulkeley's eagerness to apply this concept of root metaphors to dream analysis. For is not each of our dreaming minds a veteran of its own unconscious thinking? It should therefore be well versed in the language of its favourite metaphors, and isolating these metaphors should go a long way in revealing the syntax of one's personal dream language.

In The Wilderness of Dreams, Bulkeley also gives homage to the work of Paul Ricoeur, highlighting this philosopher's view of the authentic symbol: it is over determined, carrying both force and meaning. This force has a regressive vector as well as a progressive one, and Ricoeur "encourages us to look to root metaphors for insights into both the past and the future--into both the archaeology and the teleology of the self."

One important point to remember regarding metaphors is that they are always partial. The equation set up by a metaphor helps us understand some aspects of a thing, but it always excludes other aspects. For this reason, Lakoff and Johnson state that "the use of many metaphors that are inconsistent with one another seems necessary for us to comprehend the details of our daily existence.(221)" For example, we counterbalance the notion that time is money by speaking of quality time.

My feeling is that the dreaming mind knows that single metaphors cannot give us a full grasp of any situation. Scientists have demonstrated that people need to dream in order to function well, regardless of whether they have dream recall or not, but no one really understands why we need to dream. Let me suggest that one function of dreams might be to guard us against our own narrow views: by putting our habitual metaphors through various thought experiments, our dreams can test out their implications in a harmless way. With this groundwork set out, we are ready now to begin the practical application of this root metaphor concept.

The dream: I am given the remains of Christ in a box

In this first dream--others will be explored with the same method in subsequent articles--someone from a university brings me a box containing the remains of Christ's body. The transaction is done with an air of confidentiality, as though very few people know about the existence of these remains. The box is not square but rather in the shape of my guitar box, and it is open, revealing layers of reddish brown flesh. I place it in a corner of my bedroom, where my daughter lies on the bed, asleep.

I answer the phone in the next room and during the conversation, I let slip my information regarding this new responsibility, without specifying that the package has already arrived. The person on the phone (later recognized as the comedian Carol Burnett) is trying to dissuade me from accepting it, going on and on about germs and bad smells. I am very laconic and say something to end the conversation.

In the kitchen, there is some potato salad that has been left on the counter; it still has a few ice cubes in it. I decide that, later on, I will take a chance and eat some. I am hungry but have many tasks to do and am confused about the order that I should do them in. I enter the bedroom to change my clothes and I am about to close the curtains, to preserve the secret of the corpse in the corner, but there will not be enough light in the room if I do this. The large, ancient looking window has turned cobalt blue, and it is getting late. I see that my daughter is still asleep on the bed.

Now I have a scar on my stomach, having had some sort of surgery. Does the scar not look like a big smile? I do not want to go to the hospital to get the stitches out, but want to remove them myself.

In the next scene, a precious document is dipped in a sterile solution, and then placed in a white folder, but upside down. In the process of placing it upright, it is contaminated, but I am not the one who gets upset. The "file" in question, handled by the technicians with tweezers, is a pair of my underwear.

In the final scene, I stand wondering if I need to label the remains of the body in the box. How can I preserve the secret but also leave it to future generations? Will the Truth not reveal itself automatically, because of its authentic nature?

Extracting the right metaphor from a dream

Do dreams make any sense? Our waking minds have every right to examine these sequences of jumbled scenarios with a critical eye. One might also ask: does waking life make any sense? For, amusing as this may sound, I am discovering evidence that my dreaming mind feels that it must be equally harsh in putting my day-time metaphors to the test, perhaps to protect me from collecting premises too wantonly. You see, the dreaming mind also wants waking life to "make sense". If root metaphors are the common ground in this dialogue between the waking and sleeping selves, the validity of a dream analysis will rest largely on making certain that we extract the right metaphor from a particular dream.

Internal and external validation

Drawing again from Kelly Bulkeley's book The Wilderness of Dreams, we will want to make sure that the dream's interpretation has both internal and external validation. These methods of valuation are drawn from hermeneutic principles. As in the translation of a foreign text, the interpretation that we arrive at must support the cohesiveness of the various parts of the dream, supplying internal validation by pointing to cross-references and repeating motifs. One of the many aspects of the root metaphor is that it is expressible in visual symbols that can and do take multiple forms when the dream is not cut short or forgotten upon waking.

If the chosen metaphor is truly a root metaphor, it will also support other knowledge that is available outside of the dream: it will bear the mark of a past event; it will show evidence of cultural relevance; it will answer present day needs; and it will offer a means of transmuting energy from the past to the future. All of this constitutes external validation.

If we can express a dream's root metaphor in the form of a sentence, this may reveal how it has been drawn from a person's cultural environment. If the interpretation helps us to find the regressive and progressive vectors that Ricoeur has taught us to look for, this will not only furnish an external validation that we have hit upon the correct root metaphor, it will also go a long way in explaining the dream's reason for being.

Here is the metaphor that I feel was being tested in the 'remains of Christ' dream narrated above, along with a partial list of the internal and external points that support this choice:

Root metaphor of the dream: Classified Information Must be the Pure Truth

The cultural relevance of this metaphor is the general assumption that if government agencies bother to limit access to certain pieces of information, these must contain truthful information. The dream seems to want to demonstrate that religious faith does not lend itself to academic classification. Even if classified documents ALWAYS contained only the pure truth, the dream points out that Truth with a capital "T", the object of one's faith, cannot be kept in a box: the box in the dream is of an irregular shape; its cover does not fit; and the "germ" of the idea remains vital and transferable, and thus cannot be contained so easily. The confidential nature of the initial transaction (when I am given the remains) makes it appear as something that is TOP SECRET, and hence, classified information. Clothes in a dream may represent the persona or public self. The underwear in this dream could represent the inner self or the soul. The word "file" is an anagram of the word "life". When this symbol representing the soul is inserted in a filing cabinet, it also resists classification and the germ motif reappears. The filing cabinet confirms the association between a box shape and the classification of incongruous elements-this repeating motif constitutes internal validation that the dream concerns the elements of classification and of purity. The left-over potato salad, a remnant, represents the remains of the body of Christ seen in the first part of the dream. The historical presentation of Christ as food in Holy Communion constitutes an external validation for this interpretation. In the dream, the food that is offered is not in a wafer shape, but forced into a box shape, appearing as diced up potatoes, and placed on a "counter". When we classify things, we often count them as well. The ice cubes echo the box motif, and since the chosen food does not keep well, this causes the germ motif to reappear. The color white, a symbol of purity, reappears in the form of the white folder file. Another external validation for the chosen interpretation is the fact that Christ is historically associated with truth, and this attribute of truth is my own foremost association with his person. The term university sounds like it could mean the science of the universe, or of the All. To make a science of Truth is an attempt at classifying it. The reddish brown flesh in the box is very disturbing to me (upon waking) and bears witness to the archaeological vector that gives urgency to the dream: it is at the university that my adolescent faith in God suffered repeated injury under the attack of well-ordered arguments presented by mature, well-educated professors who were bent on transmitting their own atheistic convictions to their students. But the object of my faith is still extant. The university leaves me these remains because it has no valid means of handling them, and the germ of the great Idea is still alive. The scar in the later scene is further evidence that I was marked by these events. At the same time, it reveals the progressive vector offered by the dream: there are layers of flesh here also, but they have been sewn together and the colour of the flesh is fine. Something has been repaired, and the stitches, in the form of a smile, are lined up like the bars of a rail-way. Christ, who is the Way, has been integrated with my person. I do not fear the possibility of inviting germs by dealing with the stitches myself, since the whole point is to avoid a sterile handling of the issue by authority figures. The sleeping child represents future generations for whom the faith must be preserved, albeit without ever defining it in a confining way. One must have faith that when it is brought to light, the Truth will be recognizable by virtue of its authentic nature.
