The Cross Sound Ferry

Gray and charcoal strata, blanketing the morning sky and the dense, dark green conifer cover of southeastern Connecticut, released deluges of rain and thunderous claps. Patches of ground-hugging condensation, like the smoke tendrils created by a multitude of campfires, spiraled upward.

New London, located on the Thames River and proudly displaying its heritage with several preserved, historic buildings, had been founded in 1646 by John Winthrop, Jr., developing into an important harbor. Boasting a fleet of 30 ships and some 900 employees by 1834, it had become the third-largest whaling port after New Bedford and Nantucket, and today is a small transportation hub: buses deposit passengers in front of the railroad station, its gently curving track, river-paralleling track carrying both Amtrak and Metro North trains, while the harbor serves as the Cross Sound Ferry Company's water gateway to Block Island and Long Island, the huge, steel ramps of its boats releasing cars and trucks by the dozens every hour. Although the 2:00 p.m. run to Orient Point had just inched away from the dock on that sweltering August day, vehicles booked for the 3:00 departure had already taken their positions in the numerous boarding lanes.

Bed Guard Rail

Privately owned and operated by brother-and-sister team Adam and Jessica Wronowski and headquartered in New London itself, the Cross Sound Ferry Company was established to circumvent the geographical challenges posed by Long Island and Connecticut. Separated by the East River and Long Island Sound, Long Island extends more than 110 miles from New York, its northern coast roughly paralleling the southern shore of Connecticut, yet the two landmasses are only connected by means of the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges. Depending upon a person's proximity, he could theoretically have to drive between 100 and 200 miles on the two easterly-westerly arteries-the Long Island Expressway and Interstate 95-to reach his destination.

Remedying these deficiencies, the Cross Sound Ferry Company inaugurated scheduled, passenger and vehicle service between Long Island's East End at Orient Point and New London, Connecticut, in 1975, forging the vitally needed link for the first time.

Numerous factors, including Long Island's population surge, the East End's increase in vineyard-related tourism, the establishment of Connecticut's Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casino complexes, and the often traffic-choked roads, resulted in dramatic growth, with up to 23 daily departures in each direction during the peak season and more than one million annual passengers carried.

It operates a motley, eight-vessel fleet.

The Caribbean, sporting a 128-foot overall length and powered by a 1,440-hp engine, had been built in 1972 by Blount Marine in Warren, Rhode Island, for Caribbean archipelago and West Indian services, but was acquired by Cross Sound five years later. Accommodating 130 passengers and 22 vehicles, it was retrofitted with a new pilot house and loading ramp in 1995.

The North Star, constructed in 1968 in Morgan City, Louisiana, to serve as an offshore supply vessel, had been purchased in 1984 and converted for current use by Eastern Marine Shipyard in Panama City, Florida. Powered by a 1,800-hp engine, the 168-foot-long boat accommodates 300 passengers and 35 vehicles.

The 260-foot-long New London, resembling the North Star with its aft, elongated, exposed car deck, had been built in 1979 by the Thames Shipyard and Repair Company in New London itself, but was retrofitted with an upper cabin in 1992 and a 2,400-hp Cummins KTA38-M2 diesel engine two years later, affording speeds of up to 15 knots. It is one of only three vessels in the fleet to do so. Accommodating the same number of passengers as the North Star, it offers sufficient deck space for almost double its cars, or 60.

The 840-passenger, 80-vehicle, 250-foot Susan Anne, constructed in 1964, began its life as the Prince Nova, operating the shuttle service between Caribou, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Extensively modified by the Thames Shipyard and Repair Company after Cross Sound had acquired it in 1998, it received a new passenger cabin, airline-style and booth seating, hydraulic lift decks, renewed engine room systems, new electrical equipment, and an improved propulsion system. Now powered by a 4,600 hp GM turbo-charged diesel engine, the round-bilge hulled ferry also attains 15-knot speeds.

The Mary Ellen, built in 1983 and acquired 20 years later, is 260 feet long and carries 800 passengers and 85 vehicles. Powered by a 3,100-hp engine, it is the third to achieve 15-knot cruise speeds.

Dimensionally the largest, at 327 feet, and the most historic vessel in the fleet, the Cape Henlopen had been built in 1941 as a World War II tank-carrying craft in Jeffersonville, Indiana, then designated the USS LST 510, and partook of the D-Day invasion by landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, for which it won a battle star. Converted for civilian use as a passenger-vehicle ferry in 1966, it served the Lewes, Delaware, to Cape May, New Jersey, route, before being acquired by Cross Sound 17 years later. Retrofitted with a 3,000-hp EMD 12-645 diesel engine in 1995, the boat carries 900 passengers and 90 cars within its 55-foot beam, attaining 12.5-knot speeds.

The Sea Jet I, designed by InCat of Australia and constructed by the Nichols Brothers Shipyard in Seattle, Washington, in 1989, is the fastest and only pure-passenger vessel in the fleet. The 122-foot-long, wave-piercing catamaran, with a 5,000 hp engine and a Maritime Dynamics ride control system, had served three routes before being purchased in 1995: Boston-Nantucket, inter-Hawaiian island commuter service, and San Diego-Catalina Island. Its 400 passengers, accommodated in airline-style seats on two decks, cross the sound in 40 minutes at 30-knot speeds.

The largest-capacity, only specifically designed ferry for the Cross Sound system is the m/v John H, which was scheduled to operate the 3:00 departure to Orient Point. Constructed in 1989 by the Eastern Marine Shipping Company in Panama City, the boat, with a 240-foot length, 60-foot beam, and ten-foot draft, is the largest to be classed under the US Coast Guard's Subchapter T regulations, certified for operation on lakes, in bays, and on sounds.

Delivered on June 22, 1989, the 98-ton ferry, built of steel, features a dual-level auto deck for 120 vehicles; a forward bar and lounge; a mid-cabin with a Cross Sound Deli venue; an aft cabin and game arcade; and an upper-deck with outside seating for a total passenger complement of 1,000. Flat-screen televisions are positioned throughout.

Recently retrofitted with a cleaner-burning, lower nitrogen oxide, 3,000-hp diesel reduction engine, it attains 13-knot cruise speeds. Its call sign is WAC 6768.

Swallowing the multitude of cars and flat-bed trucks lining the boarding lanes through its aft entry and ingesting them into its cavernous, main deck hold, the m/v John H retracted its hydraulically-actuated ramp and disappendaged itself from Connecticut soil, almost imperceptibly inching away from the dock with a low, vibrating growl from its engine.

Gliding through the dark blue surface of the Thames River, it departed New London Harbor, the east coast's most accessible, deep-water port because of its Atlantic Ocean proximity, and passed the Electric Boat Shipyard Division of General Dynamics, located on the east side, in Groton. It is one of only two US sites where nuclear submarines are built and serviced.

Having sailed two miles, the boat passed a rocky point on the west side of the River Thames marking its entrance and guarded by the New London Harbor Light. The result of increasing seaborne traffic, the lighthouse, in its original form, had been constructed in 1761 on a 64-foot stone tower topped by a wooden lantern, itself replacing a temporary, mid-1700s beacon.

Secondarily replaced in 1801 by an 89-foot stone tower and cast iron lantern after a large crack had weakened the structure two years earlier, the octagonal brownstone lighthouse, the fourth in North America and the first on Long Island Sound, ranks as Connecticut's oldest and one of the first to feature a flashing light. The keeper's house, added in 1863, was enlarged at the turn-of-the-century.

Sporting a fixed white and red sector warning light, the New London Harbor Light today remains an active aid to navigation, alerting ships of dangerous Sarah Ledge.

As if serving as a first-generation GPS waypoint, the lighthouse became the first of many to be negotiated on the ferry's southwesterly course across Long Island Sound, which it presently entered. The stately appearing, red brick New London Ledge Light, featuring a mansard roof and granite details, slowly moved by off the port wide, marking the harbor's entrance.

Sparked by Industrial Revolution-created traffic, for which the New London Harbor Light had been deemed inadequate, because of a prevalence of invisible, outlying ledges and shoals, and dictated by coastal Connecticut home owners who wished to maintain the area's elegant uniformity with its French Second Empire style, it had been constructed in 1901 by the Hamilton R. Douglas Company of New London. It was one of the last New England lighthouses built.

Its crib had been towed to the site and filled with concrete and riprap before being sunk in 28 feet of water, while its 50-square-foot concrete pier, rising 18 feet above the low tide, had been erected on top of it. Three levels of windows represented an equal number of floors. A cast iron lantern, originally sporting a four-order Fresnel lens and incandescent oil vapor lamp, rose from the mansard roof. A fog signal was added in 1911. Its light consisted of 30-second intervaled single-red and triple-white flashes. In 1987, it became the last Long Island Sound lighthouse to become automated.

Maintaining 13 knots, the m/v John H inched past Fishers Island.

The Gothic revival style Race Rock Lighthouse, perched on a round base, soon moved by on the left side. Located at the west end of the island, the mini-castle-appearing structure marked a particularly precarious area whose small rock spurs, penetrating 70 feet of water, had been the cause of numerous shipwrecks and collisions. It had first been lit on January 1, 1879.

Swallowed by the almost referenceless void formed by the dirty-white cloud mist above and the surreal mirror sheen of Long Island Sound below somewhere between New London and Orient Point, the m/v John H maintained a barely registerable 13 knots, its motion only verifiable by the frothy wake it trailed. But a thin pencil line marked its origin and destination, seemingly equidistant between its stern and bow. A strong wind, attempting to counteract the soupy humidity and sulfuric heat, was only marginally triumphant. Long Island Sound itself, bounded by Westchester County, New York, and the Bronx in the west and Orient Point and Plum, Gull, and Fishers islands in the east, measures 90 miles long by three to 20 miles wide, resulting in a 1,180-square-mile, semi-enclosed area sandwiched between the East River and Block Island Sound. It formed part of the Atlantic International Waterway.

Its basin, formed by pre-glaciation stream flows, lowered as a result of two glacial advances, increasing its water depth by more than 100 feet and transforming it from a fresh water, non-tidal lake to a saline, tidal area of the ocean.

The mouth of the Connecticut River, located at Old Saybrook, empties into the sound, while most of its drainage, along with that of the Housatonic and Thames rivers, rapidly flow out at its open eastern end through a drainage basin which is almost 13 times its area.

Its waters are rich in bluefish, lobster, crabs, clams, and oysters, while its watershed supports some eight million people.

In the forward lounge on the m/v John H, the passengers sipped alcoholic beverages, while others purchased a snack or late lunch from the Cross Sound Deli in the mid-cabin. Television watching and reading were prevalent in the aft section, and a handful weathered the rays and winds on the open deck above.

The Gull Islands, located seven miles northeast of Orient Point and midway between Plum and Fishers islands, steadily moved off the port side.

Once the site of a military fort, Great Gull sported a wildlife research station after the American Museum of Natural History established it in 1948 in order to study migratory terns.

Purchased by Samuel Wyllys in 1659, Little Gull, progressing through several owners, ultimately fell into government hands with its 1803, 0 acquisition of it in order to construct a lighthouse on an optimal, one-acre, high-tide location. Other than some existing, foundation-conducive rocks, all its other required building materials had to be transported to the island by sea.

The 59-foot tower, comprised of smoothly-hammered freestone laid in courses and internally featuring a wooden, spiral, lantern room-terminating staircase, became operational in 1805, and a separate, one-and-a-half floor, wooden keeper's quarters contained two rooms on the main level and one on the upper level. A circular, 100-foot-diameter, 11-foot-thick stone wall, intended for storm protection, had subsequently been added during the summer of 1817.

A larger, 81-foot lighthouse, constructed in 1867 on a five-foot-thick, brick wall-lined base, replaced the earlier structure, and was attached to a wood and granite keeper's house three years later. A second-order Fesnel lens was first used in December of 1869.

Ending 177 years of attendance, the station succumbed to automation in 1978.

Arcing into a left turn in the now-deep blue water reflecting the powder blue sky, the m/v John H entered "the race," so designated because of the often-exceeding five-knot tidal water currents which combined with strong winds and heavy onshore seas to produce dangerous rip tides. Cracking sizzling white caps with its bow, it seesawed on its longitudinal axis.

Plum Island, the largest of the three atolls extending northeastward into the sound from Long Island, had, like Little Gull, been purchased by Samuel Wyllys in 1659 from Wyandanch, the Montauk Sachem. In 1775, it had been the site of an amphibious landing by continental troops under the direction of General David Wooster so that they could thwart potential livestock raids by the British, while a coastal artillery base had been built more than a century later, in 1899, during the Spanish-American War. Always assuming a protective role, it had guarded Long Island Sound and New York Harbor during the two world wars, occupied by some 1,000 soldiers during its peak, remainders of which include the smaller batteries and the brick quarters in which they had been housed. Utilizing some of the old officers' and animal quarters until 1984, the US Department of Agriculture established a laboratory there.

A 40-foot, rough stone tower, topped by ten reflecting lamps, constituted the island's first beacon in 1827, one year after Richard Jerome had sold three of its 840 acres to the US government. Replaced by a 23-foot taller, dual-floor, granite, and almost church-appearing structure in 1869, it marked the western point's traditionally treacherous waters.

Emitting a barely audible hum, the m/v John H cruised past Plum Gut Harbor, moving abreast of the black-and-white, rock outcropping-perched Orient Point Lighthouse, located just off the point after which it had been named and indicating imminent arrival.

Constructed between 1898 and 1899 to mark the end of Oyster Point Reef and guide ships through Plum Gut's dangerous currents, the lighthouse, comprised of curved, cast iron plates bolted together to form a truncated cone, rested on a circular, 21-foot-diameter caisson filled with concrete and externally lined with brick. It itself used a portion of the rocky Oyster Point as its foundation. The 64-foot structure, often-dubbed the "coffee pot" because of its appearance, listed five degrees toward the southeast. It became automated in 1966.

Reducing speed and the corresponding size of the turquoise enturbulation generated by its wake, the ferry departed Long Island Sound, passing through Gardiner's Bay before initiating a right, final approach turn toward the tip of the North Fork, the departing, Connecticut-bound Mary Ellen, sporting its two aft, gold-and-black stacks, circumventing the m/v John H's bow in a left arc as it passed the Orient Point Lighthouse. One more lighthouse "waypoint" remained before docking, the Orient Long Beach Bar Light, which marked the entrance to Orient Harbor.

Perched on a screw pile platform, which itself penetrated ten feet of sand on the bay's bottom, the 60-foot-tall structure was topped by a fifth order lens with a fixed red light, while the wood-framed, dual-floor keepers' house had been covered with a mansard roof.

During the winter, its spindly legs often became encased in two-foot-thick ice. In 1824, for instance, it tore way the dock, and in 1881 it broke three of its pilings and almost all of its braces.

The sandbar, increasingly distancing itself from the lighthouse, ultimately rendered it superfluous, and by 1963, it had been altogether destroyed by arson.

By 1990, a tri-section, working replica of the original, which was nicknamed "bug light" because it resembled a bug walking on the water, had been constructed and barged out to the site, where it was crane-assembled. Controlled by the US Coast Guard three years later, it was once again designated an official navigation aid.

Laboriously moving through the harbor, the m/v John H ceased motion, opening its forward, mouth-like boarding ramp and reappendaging itself to land after a 16.5-mile Long Island Sound crossing by means of its multiple lighthouses, and disgorged the parade of vehicles from its cavernous hold on to Orient Point, the easternmost hamlet in the town of Southold and gateway to the North Fork's vineyards, farms, and the nautical village of Greenport.

Traveler Security - How to Stay Safe While Out of Your Comfort Zone and Survive While Traveling

The enclosed recommendations are a result of my travel throughout the world on business for 20+ years. These observations are offered as a helpful supplement to other sources on the web dealing with personal security issues while traveling. My apologies to those who do not find these observations pertinent to their particular situation. Allow me to say that these suggestions are offered freely and without restriction so they may be passed around with no obligation. Very little of this information is original to me, and I apologize if anyone has written anything similar. Also, I am not a security professional and make no claims of expertise. This stuff works for me... each reader's mileage may vary. Some of my ideas might actually get people in trouble with the authorities and/or cause physical harm. Please read this with an open mind and a critical eye. .

Bed Guard Rail

Lots of US Embassy staff, host country Federal Police and Army staff gave me input, horror stories and advice regarding personal safety issues while I was visiting and working in overseas markets... mainly, Latin America, but including trips to Western European and Pacific Rim countries.

Bed Guard Rail

I also have input from international and US expatriates living and working there. I know that many people have a lot of experience in many different countries, and may honestly laugh at all these ideas and issues presented here as stupid and alarmist. How you take it is your business... it is submitted in serious concern for the safety of all international travelers.

It was necessary for me to learn this stuff because I have lived and worked outside the US most of my life. I first traveled internationally in the 1960s and retired in 2005 to live in Argentina. I hope you can understand that the world in post 9-11 has really changed. Radicals of the right, the left and the lunatic religious extreme and NarcoTerrorists all celebrated when the twin towers went down. You should also be aware that even pre 9-11, international travel was seriously more dangerous than it was in the 1960s. Now, bad guys all over the world have become more encouraged by their perception that bad guys can get away with bad stuff... hence, have become more aggressive.

* TRY TO FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF with the area you plan to visit. There are various aggregates of news that allow one to program their search "bots" to look for keywords involving your area of interest. I use Yahoo News, DogPile News Search element and some others. I also look for the local news sources for the area in question on the web. Here are some questions you should consider when seeking information about your geographical area of interest.

* Are terrorist/organized criminal groups currently active in the area?
* Do they aggressively attack visiting foreigners? Or, is it more local-on-local crime?
* How active are they? How violent have they proven to be within the last 4 - 12 months?
* How sophisticated are they? Do they use military weapons and tactics?
* Are they predictable? Can you expect to be safer by staying out of known areas of operation?
* Will local citizens warn visiting foreigners? Do you have local contacts who can advise you?

Groups and individuals have demonstrated their willingness to employ terrorist/criminal tactics to further their agendas. While some threats have a regional focus, others have become international and affect multiple areas. Foreign visitors, military and diplomatic staff are seriously targeted in virtually every region of the world.

ALWAYS PLAY THE "WHAT IF... ?" SCENARIO GAME
Consider ways you might become a victim of a criminal/NarcoTerrorist attack. Several factors to keep in mind include:

LOCAL TRANSPORT

Taxis: Try to never travel alone in a taxi. Try to never take a taxi off the street. Try to ALWAYS have a taxi company card on you and call or have someone call the cab for you. If not, a taxicab stand is the next best solution. Even US embassy marines have to take these precautions, and we know they're in good shape... pretty tough in a fight. They are also excellent sources of good local information. Unfortunately, one of the thriving businesses in criminal/NarcoTerror Land is to pick up a rich guy (you) off the street in a taxi, and around the corner are two additional thugs with guns who escort you to a quiet place, strip the rich guy, take his luggage, etc.

If a Visa or debit card is found, they will escort you to an ATM and make you withdraw the daily limit before they strip you naked and leave you on the side of the road. Unless... if they are impressed with what they find among your effects, the thugs may decide it's worth a try to sell you to the NarcoTerrorists (drug traffickers). They may ask for US,000 - US,000, knowing the NarcoTerrorists' usual minimum demand for ransom is US0k. Then, you may spend the next several years of your life chained to a tree in the jungle swatting mosquitoes and eating undercooked beans. If you or your taxi driver notices a suspicious vehicle or two in the vicinity, consider asking the taxi driver to take you to the nearest police station... or high traffic area.

If you must drive a car and your budget does not include an armored vehicle with "run-flat" tires preceded by a "chase" car and a following "blocker" van full of armed bodyguards, try to rent/select an 4-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance. A heavy-duty bumper is a good idea for running through barricades. If you see a police roadblock manned by only one or two officers and one (or NO) clearly official vehicle, consider running the roadblock or going around it. You may prefer to reverse out of the area quickly to a place where you can turn around and leave the area. If it is really a fake-cop scam (or, off-duty/retired cops pulling a scam), you should be OK. You may really need a heavy duty vehicle for this maneuver. If is a legitimate control point/official police roadblock and they catch you, humbly and VERY politely explain that you are sorry and will never do it again, but a friend of yours warned against false roadblocks by criminals/NarcoTerrorists. All around the world, official roadblocks usually have many, many clearly marked police vehicles and uniformed/heavily armed officers. Don't forget that NarcoTerrorists have Police uniforms and equipment, too... but, usually not too many official vehicles.

If you happen to be driving down a street and one or more people run out in front of the car in an attempt to stop you, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE to slam down the accelerator as if you are trying to hit them. They will get out of the way.

If you are in a known area for auto-related crime and someone rear-ends your vehicle as if on purpose, consider leaving the scene as rapidly as possible. This is a serious "What if... ?" scenario.

In many countries, police understand if you slow down but fail to stop at traffic lights and stop signs after dark because it is known to be too dangerous at night.

PLEASE BE AWARE that motorcycles and scooters are not always a good idea if you have to try to escape while someone is shooting at you. Car sheet metal isn't much, but every little bit helps.

ATMs: Try to only go to an ATM in the daytime ANYWHERE in the world. Even in the US. Also, pay attention to who is in the area before, during and after getting your money. Situational awareness is difficult when you're trying to get the pesky machine to work... so, consider not going to an ATM alone.

Buses: Until 1995, I always felt safe taking the bus. I would still take the Nuevo Laredo - Monterrey bus, but probably think twice about taking one in the Juarez or Sinaloa state areas. Why? The various Colombian and Mexican NarcoTerror groups stop buses full of people as bait to get the government forces to move into kill zones where IEDs take them out. I have seen the results first hand, and seeing where 40+ teenage army guys got brutally cut to pieces by home-made bombs will mess up your whole life.

If you happen to be one of the poor guys shivering naked on the side of the road with 20-30 others watching the NarcoTraficantes molest the women passengers, understand that you will spend the next SEVERAL YEARS of your life eating beans in the jungle. Poor folks get to go home...except for the young and pretty girls and teenage boys they want to draft for paramilitary service for the NarcoTraficantes .

The NarcoTraficantes are studying in the same Islamic extremist terror schools as Al-Qaida, and Colombian/Mexican NarcoTraficantes' IEDs (improvised explosive devices) are really starting to show up a lot more... in recent cases, bait and blast techniques were used in the south of Mexico to kill lots of soldiers and Federal Police.

At an outdoor table at any restaurant, don't leave your phone, camera, purse or any other valuables in plain sight or within reach of the walking public. Try to sit as far from vehicular/pedestrian traffic as possible. As always, play the "What if... ? Game" and remain alert to your surroundings. Jenna Bush's purse was jacked in full daylight in Buenos Aires, surrounded by agents.

When leaving a high-end location, such as an electronics store, Armani, etc, an expensive restaurant or nice hotel, you may have just identified yourself as a potential high-end target. If you are carrying packages, and you put them into an automobile, please try to secure the items in the trunk or a lockable compartment and be aware that you will possibly be followed by thugs with evil intent to your next location. If you are in a Range Rover or Cadillac Esplanade, you should understand that you are in a rolling high-value target, with little or no secure storage. If you stop and leave the vehicle in any unsecured location after being seen exiting a high-end location, don't be too surprised if you come back later to find the locks broken or the vehicle stolen.

A wallet is a liability, and I never carry one. I wear a slim, zippered pouch between my T-shirt and external shirt/sweater for credit cards, driving license and copies (NOT originals) of my passport, birth certificate, travel or residency documents. Sometimes, I prefer a photographer's vest with lots of internal/external zippered or Velcro pockets. This vest can contain as much as a small suitcase... currently, about 4 kilos of stuff. Fanny packs are less secure, so I usually just put reading material, inexpensive sunglasses, gum, etc in them. Cameras/GPSs and other high-end items are secured in Velcro pockets in the vest or coat pocket. As a side note, I have copied and reduced in size all my important documents for daily carry and emailed these copies to several of my web-based email accounts so I can replace them at any time from any internet/print location.

The amount of cash I carry is as small as possible. I keep large denomination bills in a money clip in the bottom of one front pocket with a handkerchief crushed down on top of it. Another money clip contains the daily allotment of small bills is in another front pocket, so I don't have to flash large bills for most purchases. It is also crammed down in the bottom of the front pocket with another handkerchief crammed on top of it. The bulk of my funds, original passport and other documents, valuables, etc are kept in a WalMart small combination safe that fits in my luggage, which I check in at the front office safe at the hotel when traveling. PLEASE NOTE that I do not agree with several recommendations that a "decoy wallet" stuffed with paper be carried to toss away so as to distract attackers. I prefer throwing my decoy stash of small denomination bills to scatter everywhere as a more time consuming distraction for a better chance of escape.

Luggage security: Most complaints regarding theft, damage or loss involves the contents of luggage. Savvy travelers will make a written inventory of items in their luggage and photograph it in case of loss. Carry important items like medication, eyeglasses, and expensive jewelry in your hand luggage, a traveler's vest like photographers use to carry their small equipment items, etc. My vest holds up to 8 kilos of goodies. Photocopy the contents of your wallet and your passport. Carry a copy in your hand luggage and leave one at home as back up. Keep luggage under your control until you check in at your destination. Consider traveling with sturdy plain-looking luggage. Expensive looking luggage may be targeted for its perceived contents. External bag tags should not list your full home address and telephone number. I put my cell phone number, my phone number and email address on my tags. I do not put my name or any affiliations on bag tags. Consider defacing your beautiful luggage with big bands of tape all around the outside, laterally, with your phone numbers, email, etc in case of loss.

Consider durable luggage that is capable of being locked or secured and that will withstand being at the bottom of a pile of hundreds of other pieces of luggage without popping open. It is a good idea to add extra banding... for a wide nylon strap with side snap locks at WalMart... or airport plastic wrap or duct tape to your luggage locks to prevent anyone from opening your luggage without detection. When flying, I do NOT lock my bags. I only use self-locking plastic tie-wraps. They work well for securing my luggage. All airport inspectors have replacements if they have to cut your ties to inspect your bags. You can buy these at any home improvement store for about a dollar. The reason for this is that smugglers have been known to slip drugs/weapons, etc into luggage only to retrieve it later and maybe with force. Passengers have unknowingly transported illegal substances/firearms that were slipped into their suitcase by baggage handlers only to be arrested later by authorities. What explanation you would give to prove your innocence to a foreign government of why you are carrying drugs or guns? If your luggage was properly sealed, you should see if it has been tampered with prior to opening it. Report any luggage tampering immediately to security before opening the case.

Luggage locks: If there is a combination lock on the bag, I put a piece of tape on the bag under the lock with the combo... usually, 0-0-0. This is because my bag was seriously harmed by customs forcing the bag open EVEN THOUGH IT WAS UNLOCKED. A sign of the times, no?

Airplane security: Beyond the obvious precautions, I would suggest trying to reserve a window seat as close to the middle of the cabin as possible. The rear and front of each cabin is where the bad guys congregate to watch over the victims. Consider what you can do to avoid being obvious about your business/military/nationality/religious affiliations.

Cruise Ship Security: Cruise ships are like a small city where passengers are encouraged to forget their troubles and relax once onboard ship. It is natural for passengers on vacation to let their guard down, especially when out to sea in a resort-like setting. Try to not let a false sense of security aboard a cruise ruin your vacation by becoming a crime victim. Before you ship out, consider taking some of these preventative steps:

After you enter your cabin, and while the door is still open, always check inside the bathroom or closest before sitting down inside. Don't assume that your cabin is as secure as a hotel. Many people have keys to your cabin and your cabin door may be left standing open for hours while the cleaning crews or cabin steward services the room. Cabin doors locks are sometimes horribly outdated and are not re-keyed as frequently as hotel rooms. Obviously, don't leave valuable items lying around. It is a good idea to have inventoried your luggage and photographed expensive items at home, and even emailed the info to your web email account for easy retrieval anywhere before you packed them at home in case of loss. Since most ship passengers are set up on a charge account system, be sure to use the ship safe deposit box for storage of valuable items, papers, credit cards or extra cash. Use all locks on the cabin door including the night latch. Consider carrying a hardware store door stop in your luggage and deploying it for extra security while in the cabin. Some are available with alarms from web suppliers. Don't open your cabin door to strangers. Whatever the person wants can be expressed from the other side of the closed and locked door. Be sure to teach children about this important procedure.

Just like in a hotel, protect your cabin key and cabin number. Dishonest crew or passengers will look for the opportunity to snatch a loose key or one that is left unattended. When in port, be sure to leave your key with the registration desk before disembarking.

Remember the phony hairspray/deodorant can safe if small items need to be secured and no safe is available. Once on board and out to sea, don't assume that you are totally safe from criminal acts. While there is little danger of an outside predator robbing or attacking you on a cruise ship, crimes can just as easily be committed by crew members or by fellow passengers. Many cruise lines hire transient and seasonal employees at low wages. Because of this, turnover is high and cruise lines struggle to keep a ship fully staffed. While most crew members are hardworking and honest people, you cannot assume that the ship has properly screened that nice cabin attendant, waiter or below deck crew.. Consider a Family Security Plan: If you bring your children aboard, be sure to establish family rules in advance. Set curfews and restrictions...just like at home. Teenagers especially should be told never to accompany crew members into non-public areas nor should crew members be allowed inside your cabin. Being at sea can cause a false sense of security. Even though the crime incident rate per thousand is relatively low, there can still be predators on board. Ship nightclubs, casinos, swimming pools and jacuzzis are favorite spots for those looking for a victim.

You also need to keep your guard up with intoxicated passengers. Food and liquor consumption peaks on board ships and cause bring out the worst in some people not used to it. Just because passengers are dressed up, doesn't mean they will act appropriately or not be overly aggressive. It is not unheard of for a ship passenger to slip a drug into your drink and take advantage of you just like on shore. There are pickpockets, purse thieves, and cabin burglars on board waiting for you to let your guard down or become careless. There are also scam artists who seek and prey on rich vacationers if given the chance.

Your family security plan for children might include bed checks, curfews, restrictions, and special meeting places. Beware of which children they hang out with, just like at home. Your children can be exposed to other children who use drugs or like to get into mischief, just like at home. Try to limit your child to ship sponsored activities in public areas. You should make contact with your children periodically even if they are supervised. Giving them the run of the ship while you are otherwise engaged is not a good idea. Always have a backup plan and identify a ship crew member as a contact person in case your child fails to show up or you get separated at a port. Make certain that the kids understand there is nothing you can do to retrieve a kid from the police if they are caught in a foreign country with contraband.

You are not in Kansas anymore. Although you boarded a ship in a US port doesn't mean that you are protected by the US justice system. Most ships are registered in non-US countries and travel in territorial waters where US laws might not apply. The cruise industry does not report crime data consistently, if at all, to the FBI or have a database of ships with the most crime problems. Shipboard crimes sometimes fall into a "no man's land" of law enforcement. A crime can occur between two people of different nationalities, on a ship from a third country, and in the territorial waters of a fourth country. The governing law is the International Maritime Law and is not as well developed as US law. Reporting a crime on board a cruise ship doesn't mean anything will be done or that the crime will ever be investigated. The FBI is the only US law enforcement agency that can investigate a major crime but only if it occurs in International waters, otherwise crimes are reported to the jurisdiction of the closest foreign country and to the embassies of the parties involved. Prosecution of crime, in many cases, will be left in the hands of the local port authority where no one can predict the outcome.

Be aware that if you or your family member gets into trouble on board a ship or in a port, you may be held accountable to the laws of a foreign country. The thing to do is to stay alert, be cautious, and stay safe while at sea. For details on the safety record of your cruise ship or how your ship will handle problems such are lost luggage or crime acts, contact the cruise line directly and ask for written disclosure of their policies and regulations. You can also contact the Cruise Lines International Association in New York City who represents the twenty five largest cruise lines for more information.

AVOIDING DISASTER

Location: Local terrorists may target locations frequented by foreigners or foreign military personnel such as certain hotels, apartment buildings, public transportation centers, and nightclubs. Avoid possible target locations. They often use the employees of foreigner frequented establishments, taxi drivers, airport staff (especially banking/money changing establishment personnel) and adult entertainment workers as associates or sources of information about possible lucrative targets.

Opportunity: Terrorists and criminals look for "soft targets"... so, learn to avoid appearing so. It is difficult to over stress the need to maintain vigilance, practice good personal safety, and to alert the proper authorities of suspicious behavior. If you find yourself unable to avoid being outdoors at night, try to walk down the middle of the street (not always possible). Be especially watchful if passing a large van or a vehicle with people in it, courtyards and deep doorways near your path. Walk purposefully with strong, determined strides... shoulders back, head erect, head and eyes constantly moving. Use windows/mirrors near the street to check your surroundings. Under no circumstances allow anyone to engage you in conversation at this time. Criminals will try to slow you down while their helpers get into position to assault you. Keep moving, speak into your cell phone as if carrying on a conversation... preferably in a language you think the possible attackers don't know. To attack you, terrorists generally must perceive you, your association, or your location as a target. Put serious thought on the subject of how to avoid appearing to be an easy target.

Be alert for how criminals/NarcoTerrorists prepare and conduct attacks through predictable steps. Through vigilance, you might be able to recognize preparations for an attack before it is executed. Be alert to unusual behavior that may indicate intelligence gathering, surveillance, collecting materials for attack, dry runs, and rehearsals. For example:

* Taking photos or videos of potential targets
* Writing notes or sketching details about a possible target
* Showing abnormal attention to details of routine activities and security measures
* Using false identification
* Paying cash for items normally bought on credit
* Purchasing large quantities of items that could be used as part of an attack (e.g., chemicals or cell phones)
* If you see something unusual, report it immediately to security officials for further investigation. Make a note of the individual's description and activities, the time of day, and equipment being used.

TRAVEL TIPS
Terrorist/criminal attacks at the Spanish/English/Japanese rail systems, Mexican border towns, Bali, Indonesia, Luxor, Egypt, London, England, and other tourist locations signal an increased threat to foreign travelers. While visiting a new location, it is natural to tour local sites of interest. While sightseeing, you should keep good anti-crime/anti-terrorism practices in mind.

Plan Ahead

* Research any known potential threats in the area. If the threat is elevated, take extra precautions or postpone your activities.
* Plan activities and a route that includes safe locations. Keep thinking, "What if..."
* Ask a friend or coworker to join you - small groups are usually safer than individuals.
* If sightseeing with others, pre-designate a location to meet at if separated during an emergency. Make sure someone knows your itinerary (acquaintances, business contacts, hotel staff?) and what time you may be returning.

BLEND IN TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS

* Conceal your national/business/religious affiliation and try to blend in with other tourists. USA red white and blue t-shirts, soccer/baseball logo clothing and religious jewelry are overly conspicuous in many instances.
* Observe and conform to local culture. Activities such as public displays of affection, drinking alcohol, or wearing shorts or skirts may be inappropriate.
* Do not bring undue attention to yourself. Avoid loud or boisterous behavior. Walking the streets at night in an inebriated state in very dangerous in many locations.

Toddler Bunk Beds - Space Saving Beds For Children

A type of bed in which one bed frame is stacked on top of another is called a bunk bed. Beds are serving more than its purpose to sleep; today it is a part of interior decorations. Many consider it as a luxury especially with those beautiful bed frames. Bunk bed is used in many places, especially for its less space utilization. It allows two people to sleep in the same room utilizing space for just one. Real estate prices soaring high and getting a place for rent becoming a major concern for every individual, space saving methods are thought out by everyone. These beds serve the purpose beautifully. They are used in ships, army garrisons, hostels, dormitories, prison cells, camps and children's room, etc.

Bed Guard Rail

Babies, when they grow about two to three years old, are normally shifted from cribs to bunk beds and toddler bunk beds come into picture. There are different types of bunk beds like the standard, futon and loft etc. These beds are available in various price ranges, depending on the materials used to make them, like metal or wood, and also the accessories available. The frames adds to the elegance of the bed. Bed frames are part of the bed, generally made of metal or wood, painted and decorated to suit the room.

Bed Guard Rail

But safety of children has always been a concern while using these toddler bunk beds. Most of the times, accidents occur due to the absence of guardrail on all both sides of beds. Many a times only one side has got the guardrail and the kids seems to fall. Sometimes accidents happen when the guardrail spacing is more, causing children to slip through these. Therefore the gap between the rails should be minimized on all sides of the bed. In some beds the upper mattress gets easily dislodged with a small push especially when the kids play. It is a dangerous situation as it can fall on the kids on the lower bunk. These beds must be properly fastened to the bed frame for the children's safety.

Thus while selecting the beds especially the toddler bunk beds proper care must be taken with regard to the guardrail which needs to be fitted on both sides, properly screwed and bolted to firmly attach to the frame. The height of the guardrail must be such that the kids cannot fall off. The spacing between the guardrails should be very less. Always have the guardrails in place. The mattress being chosen should be of a right fit for the toddler bed. The ladder to climb to the upper bed needs to be properly fastened so that the kids would not slip and ensure that they use only the ladder to climb. Bunk beds are like normal beds supported by four poles and another bed is stacked over it and to get onto it a ladder is used.

Shower Door Drip Rail w/ VHB - Universally Adjustable Overview

(Sold Only in USA) Please test inside your glass door, for non-stick protective coatings, before purchasing this product. 3M's VHB (Very High Bond) Transparent Adhesive Tape, sticks only to clean non-treated glass. Cures the swing shower door/screen problem, mopping-up water that drips on the floor, whenever the wet door opens. It channels water back into tub/pan, almost invisibly. Now, you can do normal glass squeegee cleaning, from outside the stall. Directs water down a 2 1/2"(63mm) slope towards the tub/pan and over-hangs the curb about 2"(50mm). Retro-Fits and Mounts above other broken or ineffective rail devices, which are too narrow or don't drain properly, it extends 2"(50mm) out from the glass to cover built-in rails on aluminum framed swing doors. This 2"(50mm) extension also over-hangs curbs or thresholds that do not slope enough or sweep/wipe properly. Made of Magic Moulding, a safe, strong, inert, flexible, chemical resistant, non-yellowing, synthetic material, will bend without breaking. You can easily change the 2"(50mm) width by folding along any groove, shorten the 36" (.914m) length and round-off sharp ends with scissors. Installs easiest on frame-less doors, no need for caulking or for scissor cut-outs around door frames or pivots. Now, you can squeegee water off the door from outside the stall? Designed for girls, no need for tools, lengthy text instructions, so guys won't have any problem either. A pair of scissors are all you'll need. Clean a 3"(76mm) area at the bottom of the glass with Naptha (lighter fluid) or Methyl Alcohol (from a hardware store). You'll never have to worry, when a guest uses your shower stall. Now you can leave the wet door wide-open (90º) to permit fresh air to dry out the wet stall, to reduce the growth of mold and mildew. Shower Door Drip Rail - Installation Videos available 24/7, walk you through every step, to cure this nagging shower door water problem, once and for all.

Safety Rails For Beds

Safe Steps to Take When You Have Bunk Beds for Kids

Bunk beds for kids are great for putting two children in the same bedroom.  They are also just plain fun for kids too.  However, if you aren't aware of steps you can take as a parent to make your children safe while in one, even the best bunk beds for kids can invite an accident waiting to happen.  When using this kind of childrens bedroom furniture in your home, you'll want to make sure you are doing the right things that will keep your little (and big) guys safe and sound all night long.

Bed Guard Rail

Always make sure the child who will be sleeping on the top is over six or seven years old.  Some company guidelines advise purchasers that anyone using the top bunk should be at least six.  Ikea kids beds are even recommended for ages 7 years and up.  Manufacturers always stress a minimum age guideline, and there is good reason for this.  Most accidents that happen on childrens bunk beds involve children younger than six falling off the top bunk.  Believe the statistics, and make sure anyone who sleeps on the top of the bunkbeds can physically adjust to sleeping at that level. Even if you have a child old enough to sleep on an upper level bunk, make sure that top bunk frame has guard rails and that the rail opening on the bottom half of the bed is no more than 15 inches wide.  Additionally, make sure the bed rails are at least five inches higher than the bunk bed mattress.  Such additional safety measures provide the added comfort of knowing the child you have sleeping in that top bunk bed is totally protected and secure. Make sure your children do not hang anything from the sides of the bunk bed frame.   You never want anything which can loop around a child's neck, arm, or leg and cause harm or strangulation, even if the child is just coming down from the top bunk and slips on the way down. Never screw anything into the side of a bunk bed.  While it might seem appealing to have a little hat hook or pencil holder on the side of a wooden bunk bed, those little screws or other protruding objects could scratch or cut skin if someone were to lose balance on their way down the bunk bed ladder. While you might get away with a little lesser head space above the lower bunk, it is best to make sure your children have enough head space to keep from hitting their heads.  This guideline is even more important for the upper bunk inhabitant than it is for the one on the lower bunk as you don't want a child hitting their head hard on the ceiling and possibly falling unconsciously all the way down to the floor level.   Even checking to make sure your child on the lower bunk bed has enough head room for basic safety purposes is a good idea as well. Never place a bunk bed for kids near light fixtures or a ceiling fan.  Light bulbs can burn fingers and toes.  Light globes can break and shatter.  Ceiling fans can create problematic situations.  Do you know how tempting it is to throw a teddy bear at a moving ceiling fan to see him fly through the air?  (I know.   I didn't know about this guideline when my girls shared a bunk bed, and I remember having all kids of toys, books, and papers wailing through the air inside their bedroom and out their bedroom door!)  Having lights or fans close to children in high places cause too many tempting situations and less-than-ideal scenarios. This last guideline might be so simple it is forgotten many times, but make sure you set an absolutely zero tolerance rule that there is no doubling up, jumping up and down, or horseplay on the top bunk.  Then make sure your kids know this absolutely-mandatory-to-follow rule.  While it's never fun being the enforcer, it's better to make sure your children are safe and sound than at needless risk of injury and pain.

Bed Guard Rail

Following these simple guidelines can let you enjoy the benefits of bunk beds for kids while keeping your children warm under their comfy kids blankets and safe in your loving care.

Car Beds For Kids - Top Tips to Help You Decide Which Bed For Your Child

Car beds for kids are a perfect choice for your little racer's vivid imagination. Both boys and girls will feel like champions in their first big kids bed.

Bed Guard Rail

When the time comes to transition your child from his crib to his own bed, most parents are quite ready. But the child might not be. The child is accustomed to sleeping in his cozy crib and the thought of sleeping in such a large bed might be daunting. Your child might be afraid of falling out since he will not longer be surrounded by guard rails as in the crib. Or, if the crib will be passed down to a younger sibling, he might not like the idea of sharing his crib. A savvy parent can help with the transition by making the new bed fun and exciting.

Bed Guard Rail

Car beds for kids come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. A popular choice is a model that looks like Lightning McQueen, who is a beloved character from the movie, "Cars" or a model that looks like the Batmobile, which is the cool car that Batman drives. Since car beds appeal not only to boys, you can find them in "boy colors" such as blue and black, to car beds for girls that come in colors such as pink and yellow. After all, girls nowadays also dream about being a champion NASCAR racer too.

For added safety, you can find bed rails that are compatible with your child's race car bed. Many manufacturers go the extra mile and customize the bed rails so that they blend seamlessly with the race car frame. The streamlined silhouette of a race car is a plus because this means no sharp edges, only rounded sides that will not hurt your child.

You child may be so excited about his new bed that he might spend many daylight hours playing and pretending in it. This is a definite fringe benefit, get a safe and sturdy bed for your child and he delights in playing with his new toy, the very same object.
